Home General Girraween Recreation Weekend

Clive & Susan, John & Gayle (and Rebecca and Tim, along with our good friends Howard & Brenda and John & Mavis from the Ipswich Canoe Club, spent a weekend at Girraween, via Stanthorpe. The ever resourceful paddlers from the Ipswich Club took their canoes for a paddle on Storm King Dam, while the Wynnum people honed up our bush walking skills after the winter break.

The weekend, weather wise, was very ‘refreshing’ with overnight temperatures hovering near zero. The spring time is magnificent at Girraween with the Wattle and wildflowers in full bloom. Bald Rock Creek was flowing which in recent times is a bit rare. The walk to the junction is an easy wander, and the sounds of a bubbling brook in the background made for a good&nbspafternoon walk and worked up an appetite and thirst for Saturday night. The Ipswich crew also scaled Castle Rock and is a good climb. After dinner we huddled around a fire for some fellowship and conversation with most, but not all, having an early night.

On Sunday morning, most of us ventured off to the base of the Pyramid with some intrepid souls&nbsp(John, Clive, Howard ,John S and Rebecca) attempted to reach the top. Clive and Howard made the summit while the rest decided that the wind and cold were a bit daunting.

The friendships that develop on recreation weekends away are one of the great things about the canoeing fraternity. The opportunities to learn about the&nbsplittle creek down the road, or the best put in place on familiar territory are the great things about recreation weekends. As always, every one enjoyed the time and are busy arranging the next venture.

Keep looking at the calendar for&nbspmore recreation fun.&nbsp
